How to understand the signals in a tarot spread?
When we reveal the entire spread, don't rush to check the individual meanings of each card. If a spread shows a large number of the same color, the same element (for example, all water), or several cards with identical numbers (for example, three 3s), the cards are shouting at you: "Pay attention! This is the key point!"
1. Elemental Imbalance: What is lacking or excessive in life?
The four elements of the tarot (fire, water, air, earth) represent four aspects of our lives. A healthy state is when these four aspects are balanced; however, when one element is "excessively abundant" or "completely absent," the truth of the situation becomes clear.
A. When one element is overly concentrated (excessively abundant)
If more than half of the cards in a three-card or five-card spread belong to the same element, it indicates that the querent is deeply immersed in some extreme state:
- Full of fire (many wands): This indicates that the person is extremely restless and impulsive. They may be fighting battles every day, full of energy, but are on the verge of burning themselves and those around them out.
- Full of water (many cups): This indicates that emotions have overwhelmed reason. The querent may be extremely sentimental, overly sensitive, living in their own little world or bubble, completely unable to view reality objectively.
- Full of air (many swords): This indicates a mind that won't stop thinking. This person may be rational to the point of being cold, or they may be experiencing internal turmoil and insomnia. They try to solve everything logically but overlook the warmth of humanity.
- Full of earth (many pentacles): This indicates extreme realism or conservatism. This person may be consumed by thoughts of money, work, or security, rejecting any change, leading to a stagnant life devoid of passion and emotion.
B. When one element is completely absent (invisible)
Sometimes, the signal of "absence" is more startling than "presence." This indicates that the querent's life is missing the key to unlocking difficult problems:
- Lack of fire: Things are stuck and unable to move. There may be a lot of ideals or plans, but there is "a lack of motivation and enthusiasm," with no strength to take the first step.
- Lack of water: Dry, lacking empathy. In a relationship spread, if there are no cups, it indicates that the two people are just cohabiting, "lacking the warmth of love and emotional connection."
- Lack of air: Blindness, lack of thought. This person may be busy with meaningless activities (too much fire) or misguided love (too much water), but "lacking cold observation and rational analysis," like a headless fly.
- Lack of earth: Floating in the air without grounding. Ideas may be great and enthusiasm abundant, but "lacking practical execution and material foundation," often leading to emptiness.
2. Repeated Numbers: Life's "capital letters" of emphasis
In tarot, numbers also have their unique life cycles (from the beginning of 1 to the fulfillment of 10). If a spread shows two or three or more cards with the same number, it indicates that you are stuck in a specific "life stage":
- Many 1s (Ace):
- Signal: Strong new beginnings. Destiny is presenting you with various new opportunities (new jobs, new relationships, new ideas). At this time, don't hesitate; boldly take action.
- Many 3s:
- Signal: Teamwork and initial results. This indicates that your endeavors are no longer a solo effort; you are beginning to need collaboration, integrating into social circles, or your efforts are showing initial results.
- Many 5s:
- Signal: Chaos, conflict, and challenges. This is the most headache-inducing number. It indicates that your current life is at a tumultuous turning point, with many conflicts and great pressure. But don't be afraid; once you get through this chaos, you'll level up.
- Many 9s:
- Signal: Personal abundance nearing completion. This indicates that things are coming to an end, and you are in a moment of extreme independence, gaining abundance through your own strength. At this time, learn to be alone with yourself and enjoy your achievements.
- Many 10s:
- Signal: The end and transition of a major cycle. Whether good or bad, things have reached their conclusion (it may be as fulfilling as the ten of pentacles or as complete an end as the ten of swords). This indicates that an old chapter is closing, and you are ready to welcome a brand new cycle.
Treat multiple cards as a "team." If the team consists entirely of individuals with the same personality (element concentrated), or if everyone is wearing jerseys with the same number (repeated numbers), directly interpret this "group phenomenon," and you will be able to see the core entanglement of the querent at a glance.
