The practice and rituals of divination - A standardized information retrieval process.

Before delving into the complex logic of interpreting hexagrams, it is essential to establish a standard operating procedure. Divination is essentially a "precise sampling"; the less interference during the process, the purer the information obtained.

1. Prepare the Tools: The Carrier of Symbols

Although modern methods can use any coin, the ideal tool should possess the following characteristics:

  1. Material and Texture: It is recommended to choose a metal material, as it has stronger conductive and inductive physical properties.
  2. Visual Distinction: The two sides must have clear differences. By definition, we usually consider the side with text as "Yin" and the side with a pattern or blank as "Yang."
  3. Exclusivity: It is advisable to store the coins used for divination separately and not mix them with regular circulating currency, as this helps establish a psychological connection to the "activation ritual."

2. The Art of Questioning: How to Define the Problem

The accuracy of divination depends partly on "how the question is asked." A vague question will only yield a vague answer.

  • Principle of Singularity: Ask only one thing at a time. For example, instead of asking "Should I change jobs or stay?", break it down to "If I change jobs now, what will the development be like in the next six months?"
  • Clear Time Frame: Include a specific time, such as "the return on this investment in the next three months."
  • Avoiding Yes/No Questions: Try to avoid extreme answers like "Will it happen?" or "Is it good?" Instead, observe the energy flow of the hexagram from the perspective of "current situation and trends."

3. Divination Ritual: Establishing a Resonance Space

This is not a religious ritual, but a psychological "anchoring."

  1. Calm the Mind: Before tossing the coins, take three to five deep breaths. Eliminate distracting thoughts and focus your consciousness entirely on the matter you wish to inquire about.
  2. Environment: Choose a quiet space free from phone or other interruptions. A flat surface is necessary, and it is best to place a soft cloth underneath to avoid excessive bouncing of the coins.
  3. Tossing: Hold three coins in your palm, press your hands together, and silently recite your question. Then toss the coins and record the combinations of heads and tails.

4. Recording the Hexagram: Structure from Bottom to Top

This is the area where beginners are most likely to make mistakes. A hexagram consists of six tosses, and the order of recording must be "from bottom to top."

  • First Toss: The first line (bottom line) is drawn at the very bottom.
  • Sixth Toss: The sixth line (top line) is drawn at the very top.

Recording Reference Table:

  • One Head, Two Tails (Lesser Yang): Recorded as "Single," symbolized by —.
  • Two Heads, One Tail (Lesser Yin): Recorded as "Split," symbolized by - -.
  • Three Tails (Old Yang): Recorded as "Heavy," symbolized by O. This is a moving line, representing extreme and impending change.
  • Three Heads (Old Yin): Recorded as "Cross," symbolized by X. This is also a moving line.

Once you have completed six tosses and stacked them from bottom to top, you will have a complete "original hexagram." If there are moving lines, it will generate a corresponding "transformed hexagram."

5. Psychological Preparation: Guidelines for the Diviner

  1. No Doubt, No Divination: Only perform divination when you genuinely feel confused and need guidance.
  2. No Repetition: Do not repeat divination for the same matter within a short time (e.g., within 24 hours). If you are dissatisfied with the result and toss again, the information field will become chaotic and lose its reference value.
  3. Neutral Perspective: When recording the hexagram, remain calm. Do not feel fear upon seeing symbols that represent "turbulence"; each symbol is merely an objective reflection of the current situation.
